My Skincare Savior

My Skincare Savior

I am someone who has always had issues with their skin. I have psoriasis, dry skin, spots, discoloration, and I even had a bout with rosacea. This product is the one product that when my skin is having a serious freak-out, I know it will calm it down.

Cane and Austin Retexturizing Pads with 10% Glycolic Acid

I heard about these pads through the YouTube/blogging world and was initially scared to try them. I have sensitive skin, and at the time, was dealing with rosacea and seriously chapped skin. This product is a glycolic chemical exfoliating treatment, that you are meant to use twice daily to reduce redness and fine lines, and increase skin firmness, texture, and tone.

The ingredients are listed on their website and are:

Water(Aqua), Glycolic Acid, Ammonium Hydroxide, Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Water, Polysorbate-20, Phospholipids, Retinyl Palmitate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Ubiquinone, Disodium EDTA, Sodium Benzoate, Menthol, Acetone, Imidazolidinyl Urea.

Holy cow! The only ingredients that I recognized in there are Water, Witch Hazel, Menthol, and Acetone. When I looked at the ingredients and heard the term “Glycolic Acid” I immediately thought “Acid? On my face? My red and sensitive face?” So, I did some research.

Turns out, glycolic acid is derived from sugar! That’s not scary at all. Cane + Austin get their glycolic acid specifically from cane sugar. Hence the name Cane + Austin.  How simple! The main purpose of glycolic acid is to exfoliate your skin. By exfoliating your skin, you remove the outermost skin layer and allow the fresh layer of skin to make its debut to the world. Exfoliating has many benefits, some of which include, unclogging pores, reducing acne outbreaks and reducing hyperpigmentation. However, make sure you always remember two very important rules with exfoliating.

  1. Always moisturize after you exfoliate. Exfoliating your skin, while extremely beneficial, is a drying process.
  2. Don’t over exfoliate! This is one of those times where you can have too much of a good thing.

So, now that we’ve gotten the scary scientific talk out of the way, why do I call this product my skin savior?

Cane + Austin recommend using this product twice a day; once in the morning, and once at night. Because I have sensitive skin, I only use this product once a day. I also do not use it every day. I will often use it every day for about a week, or maybe two, and then give my skin a break. I then pick it back up when I notice that my skin is not happy with me. When I am breaking out, or my skin is starting to become red, that is the time that I know it is time to break out the pads.

Recently, I had a major breakout with both pimples and psoriasis. These are the times where I start my Cane + Austin regimen. After washing my face at night, I take one pad and wipe it all over my face and onto my neck. These little pads hold a lot of product. After allowing the treatment to sink into my skin for a minute I follow up with the Estee Lauder Re-Nutriv Softening Lotion and my heavy duty moisturizer. When I wake up in the morning, my face looks healthier and more awake. It’s wonderful!

The only downside to these pads is the price. They are not cheap. The 60 pad container is $60.00. However, they do offer a 25 individually packaged pad box for $30. The first two times that I purchased these pads, I went with the $30 option. The first time around I did so because I didn’t want to have 60 pads sitting around if my skin did not like them. The second time I purchased the $30 pack was because I wasn’t ready to commit to the $60 purchase. The individualized pads are wonderful for traveling. Air travel is never good for anyone’s skin, so it is always handy to have a product that packs a punch to get your skin back into line.

Cane + Austin also offer an Acne Treatment Pad which contains 5% glycolic acid and 2% salicylic acid

Have you ever used a chemical exfoliating treatment? If so, which one do you use and what do you think?

Welcome to Books, Beauty, and Buys

Who am I?

My name is Lindsey and I work as an elementary school Speech Pathologist. In my free time I am a book, beauty, and fashion lover (hence the blog name!). I grew up in and live in the suburbs of Chicago. I absolutely love my City! J I competed my undergraduate degree at Western Michigan University and my graduate degree at University of Florida.

What do I like?

I am a self-proclaimed book and beauty addict. Case and point: I read 9 books last month. 9 BOOKS! In 4 weeks! Where I found the time, I have no idea. I am also one of those people who find it soothing and therapeutic to purchase beauty items. If I am stressed out, I guarantee you will find me either on the couch with a book, or in the Nordstrom beauty department.

Other than beauty and books, I am a huge animal lover. The zoo is my happy place. I have three cats (2 that live with my parents, one that lives with me and my boyfriend) that may or may not pop up on the blog from time to time.

I am also a big musical theater lover. I was a Broadway in Chicago subscriber this year and am taking a trip to New York with my friends JUST so we can see shows. I enjoy concerts and dance shows as well. I am the sort of person who will attend a concert even if I don’t know the band, because I know I will enjoy it. I also am an avid movie goer. I truly enjoy movies. If anything could rival my book collection, it would be my movie collection (or maybe my scarf collection…). Additionally, I am a big TV watcher. I watch way too much TV. Currently on my schedule, Castle, Blacklist, Dance Moms (guilty pleasure), Hart of Dixie, Arrow, White Collar, Suits, Grimm, Once upon a Time and So You Think You Can Dance.

Another obsession of mine? Soccer! Specifically the Spain team (featuring Fernando Torres). I have been a soccer fan my entire life and a Spain fan since 2006. My other sport obsession is college football (Go Gators! Go Badgers!).

I could probably go on and on about other interests that I have, but I will end with my friends. I LOVE my friends. I am lucky to have found some amazing girls throughout my life from high school to graduate school. I may not say it enough but, I LOVE you guys and don’t know how I would get my without you all!

Why am I starting a blog?

I have been a blog reader for years. When I started reading blogs, I briefly played with the idea of starting one myself, but couldn’t figure out what I would write about. My first idea was to write about beauty because I LOVE beauty products. I love learning about them, I love wearing them, I love introducing great products to my friends. BUT, I just didn’t think that I could keep up with a blog that was only about beauty.  Fast forward to this past year when one of my friends introduced me to the wonderful world of book blogs. As soon as I read my first book blog I thought, I could do that! I’m already reviewing books every time I recommend them to people, and also during book club (which my friends and I started last November, yay!). Once this idea popped into my head, I couldn’t get it out. I decided to marry my desire to make a beauty blog and my desire to make a book blog and Books, Beauty, and Buys was born!

What will Books, Beauty, and Buys be about?

Well, it’s pretty self-explanatory. I will review books that I read, as well as books that my friends and I chose/discuss for our book club. What kind of books do I like to read, you ask? I enjoy adult fiction, young adult fiction (romance, dystopian novels, anything pretty much), celebrity memoirs, contemporary fiction, and some historical fiction. To give you a general idea, my top 5 books I’ve read so far this year are:

  1. The Fault in Our Stars By: John Green—I know this may seem like a cliché pick, but if you’ve read this book, you will understand. It is just so intelligently written and amazing and just UGH! IF you haven’t read this book already, just do it.
  2. Uninvited By: Sophie Jordan—This is the first book of this series and I’m mad at myself for discovering it before the second or even third books are already written
  3. The Time of My Life By: Cecelia Ahern—This is the book that got me out of my book rut. I was stuck on a string of books that were just “meh” and this kicked off my streak of nonstop reading and amazing books.
  4. Fangirl By: Rainbow Rowell—An amazing recommendation by a friend. Just a seriously good book.
  5. The Light Between Oceans By: M.L Steadman—My first book club book pick.

Honorary Mention: The Sea of Tranquility By Katja Millay—Another book that you just need to read. SO GOOD.

I also plan on doing beauty reviews, recommendations, hauls, tags, and pretty much anything else I can think of. I hope to provide an educated review of beauty products to understand why/how they work as much as possible.

Now, the “buys” part is where I give myself some wiggle room. I am nowhere near talented enough to be a fashion blogger. Those people are extremely talented and creative and I just don’t have that energy in me. But I am a fashion lover. If I find or create an amazing outfit, I want to share it with the world!

I hope that I can recommend some great books, beauty products, and buys to anyone who reads this blog. If you can find at least one new love through something I review, my job will be complete.
